Why do I want to win the Best Diving Job in the World ?
Hello my name is Nick Lakoff and I’m 40 years young from Canada. I have been diving since I was 19 but up until five years ago I was a once an occasional yearly diver. Since 2005 I have been on 2 to 3 diving trips a year and doing as many dives as can be done safely and comfortably. Along the way I started to document my dives using a digital camera with an underwater casing. Taking pictures allows me to relive my dives over and over and marvel at the vast quantities of biological diversity that exists in the oceans.
As I got more confident and proficient in my diving, the idea of becoming a dive instructor started forming itself in the back of my mind. The realities of having a large business prevented me from seriously entertaining the idea of becoming a dive instructor but it never really went away.

As a massage therapist for 13 years I accomplished most of what I wanted to do in this industry and achieved success and recognition for all of it but I never had the opportunity to teach massage therapy other than in the small workshops I would give to the staff in my massage therapy centers. I am very much a people person and enjoy sharing the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years and also continue learning from others myself. In November of 2009 I left my business behind and decided to become a dive instructor. Even though I had over 200 dives up to this point, I was still just a PADI Open Water diver. I sold everything I owned and let my apartment go in order to spend 2 and half months in Roatan, Honduras to do my PADI Divemaster internship. The experience for me was transformative and working 6 days a week in a dive shop convinced me that this was not just a passing fancy but what I want to do till I’m told I can no longer dive. Sharing my passion for diving with others, contributing to raising awareness to destructive fishing practices, cruel shark finning, reef and mangrove destruction and ocean acidification amongst others are now a life calling for me. Throughout my Divemaster internship I often asked myself the question, would I get tired of this, and the answer was always clear to me, not a chance!

To me every dive presents opportunities for seeing something fantastic but as the winner the contest there are certain sites I have read that are not to be missed in Bali. In Tulamben there is of course the USAT Liberty, the reefs around Amed, Secret Bay, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, the Island of Menjangan, Napoleon Reef, Blue Lagoon, Gili Tepekong, Crystal Bay, Manta Point and the Lipah shipwreck
