“Campaigning for the Best Dive Job was a lot of work but it was also fun.  I got to think of creative ways to get myself noticed, to show Blue Season Bali my personality, and to get Blue Season Bali’s name out in the world.  I think that the most important factor in this competition is to find your own niche.  To promote both yourself and Blue Season Bali in a way that allows your personality to shine through.” – Marlies Tumolo, winner of the Best Dive Job in the World 2012

Here’s a few blogging tips:

Build a successful content strategy

  • Choose the right platforms
  • Define your goals (define your goals from the start, set up short, medium and long term goals, design and market your blog with these goals in mind)
  • Schedule ahead (plan your posts ahead, create a writing schedule, promote your posts at different time)

Content is king

  • Blogs are a great way to express yourself, connect with others who share your passions and share information. An original content is the key to the success of your project.
  • A picture is worth 1000 words : add pictures, videos, podcasts, create multimedia content or visual elements to your post
  • Understanding the importance of Post titles, headers and sub-headers is crucial for getting your content indexed (use headers, SEO, categories, keywords…)

Be consistent
Your blog is your personal brand and should be consistent with who you are. Be authentic and blog like if you have a conversation with your readers. Your consistency will be rewarded with readers loyalty.

Be persistent
Update frequently and keep users interested by posting new content that is meaningful to your readers.

Be inviting
Blogging is about creating social impact and engagement.

Be visible
There is more than creating compelling content to attract readers to your blog, you need to work outside of your blog to promote and develop the community. Use other networks to link back to your blog posts (cross post them to your facebook page for instance).

Comment and engage

How to win the Best Dive Job (Part 2 of 4)

Now that you’ve decided to achieve your goals and WIN the Best Dive Job 2014 contest, it’s time to get to work filming and editing your amazing video. You don’t have to be a professional filmmaker or video editor to submit a great entry. Remember we want to see your passion!

How to create a winning video entry!

Once you have shot and gathered your various creative footage, B roll, pictures, and music… Your first step will be to choose the right video editing software (if you don’t already use one)…

Several options are available to you.

If you’re a PC user:

  • Windows Movie Maker – If you’re under Windows, this software is probably already installed on your computer. Otherwise, you can download it for free. Although very basic, it is ideal for beginners and it should enable you to make simple edits.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro – Adobe Premiere Pro is mainly intended for professionals, it is extremely complete and offers the most flexibility. It is very fast, but because of its complexity this software is rather for experienced filmmakers …
  • Adobe Premiere Elements – This is a light version of Adobe Premiere Pro. This is a good compromise if you want to go further than Movie Maker, but you do not want to get into a professional software like Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Sony Movie Studio – This is a good alternative to Adobe Premiere Elements. This software is more complete  than Adobe Premiere Elements, but has the disadvantage of being more difficult to handle.

If you’re a Mac user:

  • Adobe Suite is Mac compatible so Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Premiere Elements are also available options to you.
  • iMovie – iMovie is the basic editing software for Mac users. It is often pre-installed on your computer. Unlike Movie Maker, it is much more usable and suitable for most beginners and amateur videographers.
  • Final Cut Pro – Final Cut Pro is somewhat equivalent to Adobe Premiere Pro. The latest version is more intuitive and easier to handle. This software should be suitable for intermediate level videographers.

Basic editing tips

Cuts

First, having a script will make both shooting and editing easier for you, so take the time to write  your scenario before starting your video. Then, do not hesitate to select the best clip from different takes / from different angles, rather than choosing a single static shot, but beware of jump cuts. Finally, to prevent losing your audience to boredom, try to pace yourself! You have maximum 90 seconds to show us who you are, use them seconds wisely!

Images

Light can be really important for your video, if you can light your scene as best you can (use sunlight when it is possible). If you need it, color correction can salvage dark or poorly white balanced shots. There are plenty of tips on the web to help you fix this. Your shots will look better if they’re not shaking, so use a camera stabilizer (tripods…) or use the stabilization effect or slow motion to smooth a shaky shot. Generally speaking, there are many video filters which allow you to correct visual mistakes or give nice effects, use them to your advantage!

Sound

You want to have a clean audio. Applying a noise-reducing filter can salvage noisy or quiet audio. If it is still not good enough, you can re-record dialogue and replace it on your video. Although, to get a satisfactory result, this is a long and meticulous process. Using music can be a great idea: this can really add value to your video, especially if it is well used and well suited to your footage.

You need to make sure that you only use footage, music and content that you own or are allowed to use. If not, we reserve the right to refuse your submission.

Although this video is very simple and has a low production value. Priscilla managed to share her passion for travel and adventure, plus she showcase her extra skills with social media and photography. We also get a sense of who she is, and her sense of humour.

Keep in mind that this year, the entry format and the question to answer have changed. We focus on your ability to use social media and marketing to promote yourself and your entry.
